Selective Laser Trabeculoplasty: A New Approach to Open-Angle Glaucoma Management

Madhu Nagar, MBBS FRCS
Presented at the AAO conference in October, 2002
Purpose: To evaluate the safety and efficacy of IOP reduction with SLT.
Methods: 207 patients enrolled. Group1: Medically uncontrolled open-angle glaucoma (OAG) and ocular hypertension (OHT). Group 2: Newly diagnosed patients of OAG and OHT.SLT (90, 180 and 360 degrees) was carried out using Coherent Selecta 7000; frequency doubled Nd:YAG laser. A/C reaction, IOPs and peripheral anterior synechiae were observed posttreatment.
Results: Group 1: Mean IOP reduction as 25.6% for OAG and 33% for OHT. Newly diagnosed OAG and OHT patient receiving SLT as first-line treatment also responded well, showing 28.5% and 29.5% drop, respectively.
Conclusion: SLT is a safe and effective outpatient procedure and is easy to perform. The effect is sustained within the duration of the trial to date (26 months).
